Our Philosophy
From our beginnings with our granolas and nut mixes, to creating our much loved breads, cakes, muffins, we’ve come a long way. Our number one priority has always been ensuring that our products are as tasty as they are good for you. That’s why all of our products are made from 100% natural ingredients, they’re either low in natural sugars or have none at all, and they are always gluten free.
Not only that, but everything we produce is baked fresh, every day, right here in Singapore, so you can be sure that it’s of the highest quality, having been locally made by our dedicated team.
For us, being all natural means consistently using whole food ingredients as the foundation of our delicious creations. When we say “chocolate” we mean a nutrient rich blend of organic raw cacao, natural healthy fats, and natural sugars. When we use orange zest it involves zesting real whole oranges by hand, and making nut butters means blending in-house from whole nuts.
No artificial preservatives or additives are ever used in our kitchen, instead we prefer for our products to have a shorter shelf life and to be baked fresh daily. While it might not be the easiest way to do it, we don’t take any shortcuts here at The Whole Kitchen, it’s what sets us apart and what makes our food taste so good.
Gluten Free
Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, rye, spelt and barley. Among other things, it can cause damage to the lining of our gut, which in turn can cause inflammation in the body and reduce the absorption of nutrients from our food. It is most often found in the obvious places, breads, pastas, pizzas, crackers, cereals and cakes, but it can also be found in some of the foods we wouldn’t expect. Foods like salad dressings, soy sauce, sausages, and even nut mixes can contain gluten as often these foods use wheat as a thickener or stabilizer.
For many of us, even if you don’t have Celiac or a diagnosed gluten intolerance, consuming more natural, gluten free foods can lead to positive changes in health. These can range from better sleep and more energy, to better digestion, less bloating, weight loss, and even a clearer mind.
It is our belief that many of the foods we consume daily don’t actually need to contain gluten to taste amazing, think breads, pastries and breakfast cereals. We always focus on using as many natural, raw, and fresh whole foods as possible, such as nuts, seeds, and fruits, as they are delicious and great for you too! In addition to this, we use naturally gluten free flours, like brown rice flour and buckwheat flour in our breads, and low-carbohydrate, nutrient-dense flour substitutes such as almond flour and cashew meal in our pastries.
If you would like to learn more we’ve written a helpful blog post on “Why gluten free can be a health choice” which we highly recommend reading.
Low Natural Sugars
We believe that a diet low in sugar is one of the best ways to support your health. Many of our products use no sugar at all, however when we do want to add a bit of sweetness, we only use small amounts of natural sugar sources, such as fresh and dried fruits, coconut sugar, and local honey.
We don’t use any refined sugars or sweeteners in our kitchen, i.e. white sugar or table sugar. Consuming refined sugars can lead to a rise in blood sugar levels and promotes the production of insulin – also known as the fat storage hormone – which transports the sugar to be stored as fat in or on the body if not used for energy. There are also a whole host of health problems associated with excessive sugar consumption but we’re sure you’ve heard it all before.
Reducing sugar in your diet can be incredibly beneficial, and can result in greater energy levels, greater clarity, clearer skin, brighter eyes, better sleep, less belly fat, less bloating and better digestion. This is why we strive to keep sugar levels in our food to a minimum, without compromising on taste, and we are always seeking creative ways to sweeten and flavour food that will get your taste buds singing.
