World Heart Day
The World Heart Day is celebrated on 29th of September this year. We believe, a healthy lifestyle and a good diet can support one of the most important organs in our body.
Here are some nutrition and lifestyle tips to keep a healthy heart:
Increase Fibre Intake
Foods that are rich in fibre are beneficial for heart health as they reduce total cholesterol levels. Some examples are:
1. Fruits and vegetables. They contain a variety of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals such as potassium that support a healthy heart.
2. Gluten free whole grains. They are a good source of fibre, potassium, and magnesium such as oats, brown rice, quinoa, amaranth.
Focus on Healthy Fats
Healthy fats work to reduce the bad cholesterol levels and increase the good cholesterol levels. You can get your dose of healthy fats through nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocado, and oily fish like salmon which contain essential omega-3 fatty acids.
Stay Active
Part of being heart healthy is having good cardiovascular fitness. Engaging in at least 150 minute of moderate-vigorous exercise spread throughout the week can help improve our cardiovascular fitness and enhance our heart function. Besides exercise, some small healthy habits to keep active daily can also include taking the stairs, short walks, and moving after every hour of sitting.
Reduce Stress
In the hustle and bustle of life, we can get stressed out and overworked easily. For a healthy heart, it’s important to keep our stress levels in check and schedule some time out to do relaxing activities. It can be doing yoga, taking a walk in nature, arts and craft, or simply just spending time with family and friends to clear our minds.
